The Bangor Daily News takes a lead role in supporting education, literacy, health, and the advancement of the creative economy. For many years, it has been a major supporter of numerous cultural organizations, including the Maine Center for the Arts, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, the Bangor Museum and History Center, the Penobscot Theatre, the Maine Discovery Museum, to name but a few. The NEWS was among the first to provide major support to the National Folk Festival when it chose Bangor for its 2002-2004 venue, and continues to provide like support to the American Folk Festival on the Bangor Waterfront.
The Bangor Daily News also is a long-time supporter of events and fundraisers hosted by various groups and organizations around the region; aimed at improving the quality of life for others. Bangor Daily News Charities, Inc., established in 1949, administers the Santa’s Helper Fund, raising monies for the Salvation Army which, in turn, provides assistance to needy families at Christmas.
