A family-owned newspaper now in its fourth generation of ownership, the Bangor Daily News has been Maine’s newspaper of record for well over one hundred years. Established in 1889 by the great grandfather of the current publisher (Richard J. Wareren), the company continues to serve its readers and its advertisers with products that are relevant to the times.

The opinion section has several elements and is operated separately from the news-gathering part of the newsroom. It contains fact-based opinions while the rest of the newsroom’s goal is to present facts from multiple sides without bias. Editorials are this newspaper’s opinions on the news of the day as written by editorial page editor Susan Young and assistant editor Tom Groening. Letters to the editor are readers’ reactions to the news of the day.

The Bangor Daily News’ Marketing Services Department works closely with Advertising, Circulation and Editorial departments of the newspaper in the areas of research, marketing and strategic planning. It also is responsible for the organization’s community relations efforts.

Committed to an ongoing program of market research, the NEWS periodically conducts and commissions qualitative and quantitative market studies, and is the repository of demographic and consumer-related data as it relates to the 8-county market served by the newspaper.

Without a sequential questioning strategy, students often flounder, go off track and overlook essential information.
